Bertil Friberg: Possible causes of marginal bone loss, a synopsis

Dr Friberg reports on and compares various studies and presents own research findings from the Branemark Clinic on marginal bone loss and peri-implantitis issues. Bone loss does not show typical patterns, and is not only a bacteria and plaque accumulation, but is multifactorial and shows a patient related characteristic. Dr Friberg gives insight in and discusses influencing factors like e.g. systemic diseases, medication, anatomical, bone and soft tissue condition, premature implant disclosure, occlusal overload, history of periodontitis, latent biofilm tissue remaining in the bone after tooth extraction, as well as patient age. Mobile or fractured implant components and cement excess are factors influencing bone loss, whereas implant design and surface do not seem to play a role in this respect.
