Implants are an excellent treatment option for the long–term replacement of missing teeth. For the majority of individuals treatment is straightforward, but a small number of patients will experience biological or technical complications, notably peri-implant disease. The successful treatment of peri-implant issues is unpredictable. Esthetics may suffer and removal of implants may further compromise the implant site and result in the loss of the prosthesis. Peri-implant disease is a multi-factorial disease involving the patient, implant surgeon, restorative dentist, hygienist and even the laboratory technician. It is vital that we identify and address possible risk factors for peri-implant disease at the outset. Trouble-shooting early may prevent more serious and difficult-to-manage issues later on. By instigating strict maintenance schedules and long-term follow up, we can keep implants healthy, identify problems early, and treat appropriately.
