Bisphosphonates (BP) are medications used for the treatment of osteopenia/osteoporosis and also for certain types of cancers. The association between bisphosphonate therapy and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) was first reported by Marx in 2003. In 2006, Jeffcoat concluded that oral bisphosphonate usage was not associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw based on a study of 25 patients and 25 age-matched control subjects.
