It is esthetically important to have both provisional and definitive implant crowns emerge from the peri-implant mucosa with the proper form of the tooth being replaced. This emergence profile can be enhanced by adding composite resin to an implant level impression coping to recreate the desired morphology and soft tissue form/location.

Today, there are special impression copings that resemble prefabricated abutments and, therefore, often are referred to as “scan abutments” or “scan bodies.” They can be scanned and the known geometry and dimensions of the “scan abutment” are used to identify the position (depth, angulation, and rotation) of the implant. The scan allows a digital cast to be formed in the computer that is then used to design and fabricate a custom abutment and definitive crown.
