Single implants and their restoration
Preservation of the peri-implant hard and soft tissues is an important aspect of the final esthetic result achieved with a single implant and its crown. Therefore, it is important to understand the biologic environment and the many factors that can enhance or detract from preservation when an implant is immediately placed into an extraction socket and a provisional crown attached to the implant.

When immediate provisionalization is used, a provisional abutment and crown are fabricated and placed at the time surgical implant placement. Fabrication of a provisional shell crown that is indexed to the incisal edge of adjacent teeth in advance of the surgical implant placement appointment is very beneficial. Following tooth extraction and implant placement, a provisional abutment is attached to the implant. Acrylic resin is then applied to the cervical aspect of the provisional abutment so its axial contour supports the desired cross-sectional morphology of the peri-implant mucosa, allowing a normal emergence profile to be developed.
